As per Sthalapurana, Shatrugna on orders from Srirama defeated and killed Lavarasura(A demon) of Madhu Nagaram and on the banks of Yamuna created the Mathura city in Ardachandra form. After Shatrugna and his descendents, the Yadavas ruled this place. Govardanagiri, the mountain which Lord Krishna lifted with His little Finger to protect the people from Indra is about 13 kms from Mathura. Original temple and Lord on whose praise the Azhwars have sung were destroyed by the foreign invaders. The Dwarakanathji and Mathuranathji temples were constructed at later dates.
