Vishesh Janma Bhoomi of Lord Krishna and one of the seven Mukti Kshetras, Mathura along with Brindavan and Govardanam are together considered as one Divya Desa. At Brindavan 11 kms from Mathura is a new Rangamandir with Rangamannar, Andal and Garudhazhwar giving darshan. There are Sannidhis for Lord Venkatachalapathy and Bhagwat Ramanuja. As per Sthalapurana, Shatrugna on orders from Srirama defeated and killed Lavarasura(A demon) of Madhu Nagaram and on the banks of Yamuna created the Mathura city in Ardachandra form. After Shatrugna and his descendents, the Yadavas ruled this place. Govardanagiri, the mountain which Lord Krishna lifted with His little Finger to protect the people from Indra is about 13 kms from Mathura. Original temple and Lord on whose praise the Azhwars have sung were destroyed by the foreign invaders. The Dwarakanathji and Mathuranathji temples were constructed at later dates.
Route About 3 kms from Mathura Station on the Delhi – Agra route.
