aṣṭamādhyāya:

saptamē  parasya brahmaṇō vāsudēvasyōpāsyatvaṃ nikhilacētanācētanavastuśēṣitvam, kāraṇatvam, ādhāratvam, sarvaśarīratayā sarvaprakāratvēna sarvaśabdavācyatvam, sarvaniyantṛtvam, sarvaiśca kalyāṇaguṇagaṇaistasyaiva parataratvam, sattvarajastamōmayairdēhēndriyatvēna bhōgyatvēna cāvasthitairbhāvaiḥ anādikālapravṛttaduṣkṛtapravāhahētukaistasya tirōdhānam, atyutkṛṣṭasukṛtahētuka-bhagavatprapattyā sukṛtatāratamyēna ca pratipattivaiśēṣyādaiśvaryākṣarayāthātmyabhagavatprāptyapēkṣayōpāsaka bhēdam, bhagavantaṃ prēpsōrnityayuktatayaikabhaktitayā cātyarthaparamapuruṣapriyatvēna ca śraiṣṭhyaṃ durlabhatvaṃ ca pratipādya ēṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ jñātavyōpādēyabhēdāṃśca prāstauṣīt . idānīmaṣṭamē prastutān jñātavyōpādēyabhēdān vivinakti .

kiṃ tadbrahma kimadhyātmaṃ kiṃ karma puruṣōttama  .

adhibhūtaṃ ca kiṃ prōktamadhidaivaṃ kimucyatē    . 1 .

adhiyajña: kathaṃ kōätra dēhēäsminmadhusūdanam  .

prayāṇakālē ca kathaṃ jñēyōäsi niyatātmabhi:  . 2 .

jarāmaraṇamōkṣāya bhagavantamāśritya yatamānānāṃ jñātavyatayōktaṃ tadbrahma adhyātmaṃ ca kimiti vaktavyam . aiśvaryārthīnāṃ jñātavyamadhibhūtamadhidaivaṃ ca kim? trayāṇāṃ jñātavyōädhiyajña-śabdanirdiṣṭaśca ka:? tasya cādhiyajñabhāva: katham? prayāṇakālē ca ēbhistribhirniyatātmabhi: kathaṃ jñēyōäsi?.1-2.

śrībhagavānuvāca

akṣaraṃ brahma paramaṃ svabhāvōädhyātmamucyatē  .

bhūtabhāvōdbhavakarō visarga: karmasaṃjñita:            . 3 .

tadbrahmēti nirdiṣṭaṃ paramamakṣaraṃ na kṣaratītyakṣaram, kṣētrajñasamaṣṭirūpam . tathā ca śruti:, avyaktamakṣarē līyatē akṣaraṃ tamasi līyatē (su.2) ityādikā . paramamakṣaraṃ prakṛtivinirmuktamātma-svarūpam . svabhāvōädhyātmamucyatē . svabhāva: prakṛti: . anātmabhūtam, ātmani saṃbadhyamānaṃ bhūtasūkṣmatadvāsanādikaṃ pañcāgnividyāyāṃ jñātavyatayōditam . tadubhayaṃ prāpyatayā tyājyatayā ca mumukṣubhirjñātavyam . bhūtabhāvōdbhavakarō visarga: karmasaṃjñita: . bhūtabhāva: manuṣyādibhāva: tadudbhavakarō yō visarga:, pañcamyāmāhutāvāpa: puruṣavacasō bhavanti (chā.5.9.1) iti śrutisiddhō yōṣitsaṃbandhaja:, sa karmasaṃjñita: . taccākhilaṃ sānubandhamudvējanīyatayā, pariharaṇīyatayā ca mumukṣubhirjñātavyam . pariharaṇīyatayā cānantaramēva vakṣyatē, ‘yadicchantō brahmacaryaṃ caranti‘ iti . 3 .

adhibhūtaṃ kṣarō bhāva: puruṣaścādhidaivatam  .

adhiyajñōähamēvātra dēhē dēhabhṛtāṃ vara         . 4 .

aiśvarryārthināṃ jñātavyatayā nirdiṣṭamadhibhūtaṃ kṣarō bhāva: viyadādibhūtēṣu vartamāna: tatpariṇāmaviśēṣa: kṣaraṇasvabhāvō vilakṣaṇa: śabdasparśādissāsraya: . vilakṣaṇā: sāśrayāśśabdasparśa-rūparasagandhā: aiśvaryārthibhi: prāpyāstairanusandhēyā: . puruṣaścādhidaivatamadhidaivataśabdanirdiṣṭa: puruṣa: adhidaivataṃ dēvatōpari vartamāna:, indraprajāpatiprabhṛtikṛtsnadaivatōpari vartamāna:, indraprajāpatiprabhṛtīnāṃ bhōgyajātadvilakṣaṇaśabdādērbhōktā puruṣa:. sā ca bhōktṛtvāvasthā aiśvaryārthibhi: prāpyatayānusandhēyā . adhiyajñōähamēva . adhiyajña: yajñairārādhyatayā vartamāna: . atra indrādau mama dēhabhūtē ātmatayāvasthitōähamēva yajñairārādhya iti mahāyajñādinitya-naimittikānuṣṭhānavēlāyāṃ trayāṇāmadhikāriṇāmanusandhēyamētat . 4 .

antakālē ca māmēva smaranmuktvā kalēbaram  .

ya: prayāti sa madbhāvaṃ yāti nāstyatra saṃśaya:  . 5 .

idamapi trayāṇāṃ sādhāraṇam . antakālē ca māmēva smaran kalēvaraṃ tyaktvā ya: prayāti, sa madbhāvaṃ yāti mama yō bhāva: svabhāva: taṃ yāti tadānīṃ yathā māmanusandhattē, tathāvidhākārō bhavatītyartha: yathā ādibharatādayastadānīṃ smaryamāṇamṛgasajātīyākārātsaṃbhūtā: .5 .

smartussvaviṣayasajātīyākāratāpādanamantyapratyayasya svabhāva iti suspaṣṭamāha –

yaṃ yaṃ vāpi smaran bhāvaṃ tyajatyantē kalēbaram  .

taṃ tamēvaiti kauntēya sadā tadbhāvabhāvita:    . 6 .

antē antakālē yaṃ yaṃ vāpi bhāvaṃ smaran kalēbaraṃ tyajati, taṃ taṃ bhāvamēva maraṇānantaramēti . antimapratyayaśca pūrvabhāvitaviṣaya ēva jāyatē . 6 .

tasmātsarvēṣu kālēṣu māmanusmara yudhya ca  .

mayyarpitamanōbuddhi: māmēvaiṣyasyasaṃśaya:     . 7 .             yasmātpūrvakālābhyastaviṣaya ēvāntyapratyayō jāyatē, tasmātsarvēṣu kālēṣvāprayāṇādaharahaḥ māmanusmara. aharaharanusmṛtikaraṃ yuddhādikaṃ varṇāśramānubandhi śrutismṛticōditaṃ nityanaimittikaṃ ca karma kuru . ēvamupāyēna mayyarpitamanōbuddhi: antakalē ca māmēva smaran yathābhilaṣitaprakāraṃ māṃ prāpsyasi nātra saṃśaya: . 7 .

ēvaṃ sāmānyēna svaprāpyāvāptirantyapratyayādhīnētyuktvā tadarthaṃ trayāṇāmupāsanaprakārabhēdaṃ vaktumupakramatē tatraiśvaryārthināmupāsanaprakāraṃ yathōpāsanamantyapratyayaprakāraṃ cāha –

abhyāsayōgayuktēna cētasā nānyagāminā  .

paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ yāti pārthānucintayan     . 8 .

aharaharabhyāsayōgābhyāṃ yuktatayā nānyagāminā cētasā antakālē paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ māṃ vakṣyamāṇaprakāraṃ cintayanmāmēva yāti  ādibharatamṛgatvaprāptivadaiśvaryaviśiṣṭatayā matsamānākārō bhavati . abhyāsa: nityanaimittikāviruddhēṣu sarvēṣu kālēṣu manasōpāsyasaṃśīlanam . yōgastu aharaharyōgakālēänuṣṭhīyamānaṃ yathōktalakṣaṇamupāsanam . 8 .

kaviṃ purāṇamanuśāsitāramaṇōraṇīyāṃsamanusmarēdya:  .

sarvasya dhātāramacintyarūpamādityavarṇaṃ tamasa: parastāt     . 9 .

prayāṇakālē manasācalēna bhaktyā yuktō yōgabalēna caiva  .

bhruvōrmadhyē prāṇamāvēśya samyaksa taṃ paraṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam  . 10 .

kaviṃ sarvajñan purāṇaṃ purātanamanuśāsitāraṃ viśvasya praśāsitāramaṇōraṇīyāṃsaṃ jīvādapi sūkṣmataram, sarvasya dhātāraṃ sarvasya sraṣṭāram, acintyarūpaṃ sakalētaravisajātīyasvarūpam, ādityavarṇaṃ tamasa: parastādaprākṛtasvāsādhāraṇadivyarūpam, tamēvaṃbhūtamaharaharabhyasyamānabhaktiyuktayōgabalēna ārūḍhasaṃskāratayā acalēna manasā prayāṇakālē bhruvōrmadhyē prāṇamāvēśya saṃsthāpya tatra bhūmadhyē divyaṃ puruṣaṃ yōänusmarēt sa tamēvōpaiti  tadbhāvaṃ yāti, tatsamānaiśvaryō bhavatītyartha: . 9-10 .

atha kaivalyārthināṃ smaraṇaprakāramāha –

yadakṣaraṃ vēdavidō vadanti viśanti yadyatayō vītarāgā:  .

yadicchantō brahmacaryaṃ caranti tattē padaṃ saṃgrahēṇa pravakṣyē  . 11 .

yadakṣaramasthūlatvādiguṇakaṃ vēdavidō vadanti, vītarāgāśca yatayō yadakṣaraṃ viśanti, yadakṣaraṃ prāptumicchantō brahmacaryaṃ caranti, tatpadaṃ saṃgrahēṇa tē pravakṣyē . padyatē gamyatē cētasēti padam tannikhilavēdāntavēdyaṃ matsvarūpamakṣaraṃ yathā upāsyam, tathā saṃkṣēpēṇa pravakṣyāmītyartha: 11 .

sarvadvārāṇi saṃyamya manō hṛdi nirudhya ca  .

mūrdhnyādhāyātmana: prāṇamāsthitō yōgadhāraṇām  . 12 .

ōmityēkākṣaraṃ brahma vyāharanmāmanusmaran  .

ya: prayāti tyajan dēhaṃ sa yāti paramāṃ gatim  . 13 .

sarvāṇi śrōtrādīnīndriyāṇi jñānadvārabhūtāni saṃyamya svavyāpārēbhyō vinivartya, hṛdayakamalaniviṣṭē mayyakṣarē manō nirudhya, yōgākhyāṃ dhāraṇāmāsthita: mayyēva niścalāṃ sthitimāsthita:, ōmityēkākṣaraṃ brahma madvācakaṃ vyāharan, vācyaṃ māmanusmaran, ātmana: prāṇaṃ mūrdhnyādhāya dēhaṃ tyajan ya: prayāti  sa yāti paramāṃ gatiṃ prakṛtiviyuktaṃ matsamānākāramapunarāvṛttimātmānaṃ prāpnōtītyartha: . ya: sa sarvēṣu bhūtēṣu naśyatsu na vinaśyati . avyaktōäkṣara ityuktastamāhu: paramāṃ gatim . (20,21) ityanantaramēva vakṣyatē  .12 – 13.

ēvamaiśvaryārthina: kaivalyārthinaśca svaprāpyānuguṇaṃ bhagavadupāsanaprakāra ukta: atha jñāninō bhagavadupāsanaprakāraṃ prāptiprakāraṃ cāha

ananyacētā: satataṃ yō māṃ smarati nityaśa:  .

tasyāhaṃ sulabha: pārtha nityayuktasya yōgina:        . 14 .

nityaśa: māmudyōgaprabhṛti satataṃ sarvakālamananyacētā: ya: smarati atyarthamatpriyatvēna matsmṛtyā vinā ātmadhāraṇamalabhamānō niratiśayapriyāṃ smṛtiṃ ya: karōti tasya nityayuktasya nityayōgaṃ kāṅkṣamāṇasya yōgina: ahaṃ sulabha: ahamēva prāpya: na madbhāva aiśvaryādika: suprāpaśca . tadviyōgamasahamānōähamēva taṃ vṛṇē . yamēvaiṣa vṛṇutē tēna labhya: (kaṭha.2.23, mu.3.2.3) iti hi śrūyatē . matprāptyanuguṇōpāsanavipākaṃ tadvirōdhinirasanamatyarthamatpriyatvādikaṃ cāhamēva dadāmītyartha: . vakṣyatē ca tēṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam . dadāmi buddhiyōgaṃ taṃ yēna māmupāyānti tē . tēṣāmēvānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tama:. nāśayāmyātmabhāvasthō jñānadīpēna bhāsvatā . (10-10,11) iti  . 14.

ata: paramadhyāyaśēṣēṇa jñānina: kaivalyārthinaścāpunarāvṛttimaiśvaryārthina: punarāvṛttiṃ cāha

māmupētya punarjanma du:khālayamaśāśvatam  .

nāpnuvanti mahātmāna: saṃsiddhiṃ paramāṃ gatā:       . 15 .

māṃ prāpya punarnikhiladu:khālayamaśāśvatamasthiraṃ janma na prāpnuvanti . yata ētē mahātmāna: mahāmanasa:, yathāvasthitamatsvarūpajānānā atyarthamatpriyatvēna mayā vinā ātmadhāraṇamalabhamānā mayyāsaktamanasō madāśrayā māmupāsya paramasaṃsiddhirūpaṃ māṃ prāptā: . 15 .

aiśvaryagatiṃ prāptānāṃ bhagavantaṃ prāptānāṃ ca punarāvṛttau apunarāvṛttau ca hētumanantaramāha –

ā brahmabhuvanāllōkā: punarāvartinōärjuna  .

māmupētya tu kauntēya punarjanma na vidyatē  . 16 .

brahmalōkaparyantā: brahmāṇḍōdaravartinassarvē lōkā bhōgaiśvaryālayā: punarāvartina: vināśina: . ata aiśvaryagatiṃ prāptānāṃ prāpyasthānavināśādvināśitvamavarjanīyam . māṃ sarvajñaṃ satyasaṅkalpaṃ nikhilajagadutpatti-sthitilayalīlaṃ paramakāruṇikaṃ sadaikarūpaṃ prāptānāṃ vināśaprasaṅgābhāvāttēṣāṃ punarjanma na vidyatē 16 .

brahmalōkaparyantānāṃ lōkānāṃ tadantarvartināṃ ca paramapuruṣasaṅkalpakṛtāmutpattivināśa-kālavyavasthāmāha-

sahasrayugaparyantamaharyadbrahmaṇō vidu:  .

rātriṃ yugasahasrāntāṃ tēähōrātravidō janā:     . 17 .

avyaktādvyaktaya: sarvā: prabhavantyaharāgamē  .

rātryāgamē pralīyantē tatraivāvyaktasaṃjñakē            . 18 .

bhūtagrāma: sa ēvāyaṃ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyatē  .

rātryāgamēävaśa: pārtha prabhavatyaharāgamē              . 19 .

yē manuṣyādicaturmukhāntānāṃ matsaṅkalpakṛtāhōrātravyavasthāvidō janā:, tē brahmaṇaścaturmukhasya yadaha: taccaturyugasahasrāvasānaṃ vidu:, rātriṃ ca tathārūpām . tatra brahmaṇōäharāgamasamayē trailōkyāntarvartinyō dēhēndriyabhōgyabhōgasthānarūpā vyaktaścaturmukhadēhāvasthādavyaktātprabhavanti . tatraiva avyaktāvasthāviśēṣē caturmukhadēhē rātryāgamasamayē pralīyantē . sa ēvāyaṃ karmavaśyō bhūtagrāmōäharāgamē bhūtvā bhutvā rātryāgamē pralīyatē . punarapyaharāgamē prabhavati . tathā varṣatāvasānarūpayugasahasrāntē brahmalōkaparyantā lōkā: brahmā ca, pṛthivyapsu pralīyatē āpastējasi līyantē (subā.2) ) ityādikramēṇa avyaktākṣaratama:paryantaṃ mayyēva pralīyantē. ēvaṃ madvyatiriktasya kṛtsnasya kālavyavasthayā matta utpattē: mayi pralayāccōtpattivināśayōgitvaṃ avarjanīyamityaiśvaryagatiṃ prāptānāṃ punarāvṛttiraparihāryā . māmupētānāṃ tu na punarāvṛttiprasaṅga: .19.

atha kaivalyaṃ praptānāmapi punarāvṛttirna vidyata ityaha –

parastasmāttu bhāvōänyōävyaktōävyaktātsanātana:  .

yasya sarvēṣu bhūtēṣu naśyatsu na vinaśyati  . 20 .

avyaktōäkṣara ityuktastamāhu: paramāṃ gatim  .

yaṃ prāpya na nivartantē taddhāma paramaṃ mama  . 21 .

tasmādavyaktādacētanaprakṛtirūpātpuruṣārthatayā para: utkṛṣṭō bhāvōänyō jñānaikākāratayā tasmādvisajātīya:, avyakta: kēnacitpramāṇēna na vyajyata ityavyakta:, svasaṃvēdyasvāsādhāraṇākāra ityartha: sanātana: utpattivināśānarhātayā nitya: ya: sarvēṣu viyadādibhūtēṣu sakāraṇēṣu sakāryēṣu vinaśyatsu tatra tatra sthitōäpi na vinaśyati sa: avyaktōäkṣara ityukta:, yē tvakṣaramanirdēśyamavyaktaṃ paryupāsatē (12.3), kūṭasthōäkṣara ucyatē (15.16) ityādiṣu  taṃ vēdavida: paramāṃ gatimāhu: . ayamēva, ya: prayāti tyajan dēhaṃ sa yāti paramāṃ gatim (8.13) ityatra paramagatiśabdanirdiṣṭōäkṣara: prakṛtisaṃsargaviyuktasvasvarūpēṇāvasthita ātmētyartha:. yamēvaṃbhūtaṃ svarūpēṇāvasthitaṃ prāpya na nivartantē tanmama paramaṃ dhāma paraṃ niyamanasthānam . acētanaprakṛtirēkaṃ niyamanasthānam tatsaṃsṛṣṭarūpā jīvaprakṛtirdvitīyaṃ niyamanasthānam . acitsaṃsargaviyuktaṃ svarūēṇāvathitaṃ muktasvarūpaṃ paramaṃ niyamanasthānamityartha: . taccāpunarāvṛttirūpam . atha vā prakāśavācī dhāmaśabda: prakāśa: cēha jñānamabhiprētam prakṛtisaṃsṛṣṭātparichinnajñānarūpādātmanōäparicchinnajñānarūpatayā muktasvarūpaṃ paraṃ dhāma . 20 – 21. jñānina: prāpyaṃ tu tasmādatyantavibhaktamityāha –

puruṣassa para: pārtha bhaktyā labhyastvananyayā  .

yasyāntassthāni bhūtāni yēna sarvamidaṃ tatam  . 22 .

matta: parataraṃ nānyatkiñcidasti dhanaṃjaya . mayi sarvamidaṃ prōtaṃ sūtrē maṇigaṇā iva . (7.7), māmēbhya: paramavyayam (7.13) ityādinā nirdiṣṭasya yasya antassthāni sarvāṇi bhūtāni, yēna ca parēṇa puruṣēṇa sarvamidaṃ tatam, sa para: puruṣa: ananyacētāssatatam (8.14) ityananyayā bhaktyā labhya:  . 22 .

athātmayāthātmyavidu: paramapuruṣaniṣṭasya ca sādharaṇīmarcirādikāṃ gatimāha  dvayōrapyarcirādikā gati: śrutau śrutā . sā cāpunarāvṛttilakṣaṇā . yathā pañcāgnividyāyām, tadya itthaṃ viduryē cēmēäraṇyē śraddhā tapa ityupāsatē, tēärciṣamabhisaṃbhavantyarciṣōäha: (chā.5.10.1) ityādau . arcirādikayā gatasya parabrahmaprāptirapunarāvṛttiścāmnātā, sa ēnān brahma gamayati ētēna pratipadyamānā imaṃ mānavamāvartaṃ nāvartantē (chā.4.15.6) iti . na ca prajāpativākyādau śrutaparavidyāṅgabhūtātmaprāptiviṣayēyam, tadya itthaṃ vidu: iti gatiśruti:, yē cēmēäraṇyē śraddhā tapa ityupāsatē iti paravidyāyā: pṛthakchrutivaiyārthyāt . pañcāgnividyāyāṃ ca, iti tu pañcamyāmāhutāvāpa: puruṣavacasō bhavanti (chā.5.9.1) iti, ramaṇīyacaraṇā: … kapūyacaraṇā: (chā.5.10.7) iti puṇyapāpahētukō manuṣyādibhāvōäpāmēva bhūtāntarasaṃsṛṣṭānām, ātmanastu tatpariṣvaṅgamātramiti cidacitōrvivēkamabhidhāya, tadya itthaṃ vidu:. tēärciṣamasaṃbhavanti … imaṃ mānavamāvartaṃ nāvartantē iti viviktē cidacidvastunī tyājyatayā prāpyatayā ca ya itthaṃ vidu: tēärcirādinā gacchanti, na ca punarāvartanta ityuktamiti gamyatē . ātmayāthātmyavida: paramapuruṣaniṣṭhasya ca sa ēnān brahma gamayati iti brahmaprāptivacanādacidviyuktamātmavastu brahmātmakatayā brahmaśēṣataikarasamityanusandhēyam tatkratunyāyācca. paraśēṣataikarasatvaṃ ca ya ātmani tiṣṭhan … yasyātmā śarīram (śata.mādhya.14.6.5.30) ityādiśrutisiddham .

yatra kālē tvanāvṛttimāvṛttiṃ caiva yōgina:  .

prayātā yānti taṃ kālaṃ vakṣyāmi bharatarṣabha  . 23 .

agnirjyōtirahaśśukla: ṣaṇmāsā uttarāyaṇam  .

tatra prayātā gacchanti brahma brahmavidō janā:       . 24 .

atra kālaśabdō mārgasyāha:prabhṛtisaṃvatarāntakālābhimānidēvatābhūyastayā mārgōpalakṣaṇārtha: . yasminmārgē prayātā yōginōänāvṛttiṃ puṇyakarmāṇaścāvṛttiṃ yānti taṃ mārgaṃ vakṣyāmītyartha: . agnirjyōtirahaśśukla: ṣaṇmāsā uttarāyaṇam iti saṃvatsarādīnāṃ pradarśanam . 23 – 24 .

dhūmō rātristathā kṛṣṇa: ṣaṇmāsā dakṣiṇāyaṇam  .

tatra cāndramasaṃ jyōtiryōgī prāpya nivartatē          . 25 .

ētacca dhūmādimārgasthapitṛlōkādē: pradarśanam .

atra yōgiśabda: puṇyakarmasaṃbandhiviṣaya:                  . 25 .

śuklakṛṣṇē gatī hyētē jagata: śāśvatē matē  .

ēkayā yātyanāvṛttimanyayāvartatē puna:                   . 26 .

śuklā gati: arcirādikā, kṛṣṇā ca dhūmādikā . śuklayānāvṛttiṃ yāti kṛṣṇayā tu punarāvartatē. ētē śuklakṛṣṇē gatī jñānināṃ vividhānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇāṃ ca śrutau śāśvatē matē . tadya itthaṃ viduryē cēmēäraṇyē śraddhā tapa ityupāsatē tēärciṣamabhisaṃbhavanti, atha ya imē grāma iṣṭāpūrtē dattamityupāsatē tē dhūmamabhisaṃbhavanti (chā.5.10.1-3) iti . 26 .

naitē sṛtī pārtha jānan yōgī muhyati kaścana  .

tasmātsarvēṣu kālēṣu yōgayuktō bhavārjuna           . 27 .

ētau mārgau jānan yōgī prayāṇakālē kaścana na muhyati api tu svēnaiva dēvayānēna pathā yāti . tasmādaharaharcirādigaticintanākhyayōgayuktō bhava 27 .

athādhyāyadvayōditaśāstrārthavēdanaphalamāha –

vēdēṣu yajñēṣu tapassu caiva dānē ca yatpuṇyaphalaṃ pradiṣṭam  .
