pañcadaśōädhyāyaḥ

kṣētrādhyāyē kṣētrakṣētrajñabhūtayō: prakṛtipuruṣayō: svarūpaṃ viśōdhya viśuddhasyāparicchinna-jñānaikākārasyaiva puruṣasya prākṛtaguṇasaṅgapravāhanimittō dēvādyākārapariṇataprakṛtisaṃbandhōänādiḥ ityuktam . anantarē cādhyāyē puruṣasya kāryakāraṇōbhayāvasthaprakṛtisaṃbandhō guṇasaṅgamūlō bhagavataiva kṛta ityuktvā guṇasaṅgaprakāraṃ savistaraṃ pratipādya guṇasaṅganivṛttipūrvakātma-yāthātmyāvāptiśca bhagavadbhaktimūlētyuktam. idānīṃ bhajanīyasya bhagavata: kṣarākṣarātmakabaddha-muktavibhūtimattām, vibhūtibhūtātkṣarākṣarapuruṣadvayānnikhilahēya-pratyanīkakalyāṇaiktānatayā atyantōtkarṣēṇa visajātīyasya bhagavata: puruṣōttamatvaṃ ca vaktumārabhatē .

tatra tāvadasaṅgarūpaśastracchinnabandhāṃ akṣarākhyavibhūtiṃ vaktuṃ chēdyarūpabandhākārēṇa vitatamacitpariṇāma-viśēṣamaśvatthavṛkṣākāraṃ kalpayan –

śrībhagavānuvāca

ūrdhvamūlamadhaśśākhamaśvatthaṃ prāhuravyayam  .

chandāṃsi yasya parṇāni yastaṃ vēda sa vēdavit       . 1 .

yaṃ saṃsārākhyamaśvathamūrdhvamūlamadhaśśākhamavyayaṃ prāhu: śrutaya:, ūrdhvamūlōävākchākha ēṣōäśvattha: sanātana: (ka.6.1), ūrdhvamūlamavākchākhaṃ vṛkṣaṃ yō vēda saṃprati (yaju.ā.1.11.5) ityādyā: . saptalōkōpariniviṣṭacaturmukhāditvēna tasyōrdhvamūlatvam . pṛthivīnivāsisakala-narapaśumṛgakrimikīṭapataṅgasthāvarāntatayā adhaśśākhatvam . asaṅgahētubhūtāda samyagjñānōdayāt pravāharūpēṇācchēdyatvēnāvyayatvam . yasya cāśvatthasya chandāṃsi parṇānyāhu: . chandāṃsi –  śrutaya:, vāyavyaṃ śvētamālabhēta bhūtikāma: (yaju.2.1.1), aindrāgnamēkādaśa kapālaṃ nirvapētprajākāma: (yaju.2.2.1) ityādiśrutipratipāditai: kāmyakarmabhirvardhatēäyaṃ saṃsāravṛkṣa iti chandāṃsyēvāsya parṇāni. parṇairhi vṛkṣō vardhatē . yastamēvaṃbhūtamaśvatthaṃ vēda, sa vēdavit . vēdō hi saṃsāravṛkṣacchēdō-pāyaṃ vadati chēdyavṛkṣasvarūpajñānaṃ chēdanōpāyajñanōpayōgīti vēdavidityucyatē. 15.1.

adhaścōrdhvaṃ ca prasṛtāstasya śākhā guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālā:  .

tasya manuṣyādiśākhasya vṛkṣasya tattatkarmakṛtā aparāśca adha: śākhā: punarapi manuṣyapaśvādirūpēṇa prasṛtā bhavanti ūrdhvaṃ ca gandharvayakṣadēvādirūpēṇa prasṛtā bhavanti . tāśca guṇapravṛddhā: guṇai: sattvādibhi: pravṛddhā:, viṣayapravālā: śabdādiviṣayapallavā: . kathamityatrāha –

adhaśca mūlānyanusaṃtatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣyalōkē  . 2 .

brahmalōkamūlasyāsya vṛkṣasya manuṣyāgrasya, adhō manuṣyalōkē mūlānyanusantatāni tāni ca karmānubandhīni karmāṇyēvānubandhīni mūlāni adhō manuṣyalōkē ca bhavantītyartha: . manuṣyatvāvasthāyāṃ kṛtairhi karmabhi: adhō manuṣyapaśvādaya:, ūrdhvaṃ ca dēvādayō bhavanti . 2 .

na rūpamasyēha tathōpalabhyatē nāntō na cādirna ca saṃpratiṣṭhā  .

asya vṛkṣasya caturmukhāditvēnōrdhvamūlatvam, tatsantānaparamparayā manuṣyāgratvēna adhaśśākhatvam, manuṣyatvē kṛtai: karmabhirmūlabhūtai: punarapyadhaścōrdhvaṃ ca prasṛtaśākhatvamiti yathēdaṃ rūpaṃ nirdiṣṭam, na tathā saṃsāribhirupalabhyatē . manuṣyōähaṃ dēvadattasya putrō yajñadattasya pitā tadanurūpaprigrahaścētyētāvanmātramupalabhyatē. tathā asya vṛkṣasya anta: vināśōäpi guṇamayabhōgēṣu asaṅgakṛta iti nōpalabhyatē . tathā asya guṇasaṅga ēvādiriti nōpalabhyatē . tasya pratiṣṭhā ca anātmani ātmābhimānarūpamajñānamiti nōpalabhyatē pratitiṣṭhatyasminnaēvēti hyajñāna-mēvāsya pratiṣṭhā . 2 .

aśvatthamēnaṃ suvirūḍhamūlamasaṅgaśastrēṇa dṛḍhēna chitvā  . 3 .

tata: padaṃ tatparimārgitavyaṃ yasmin gatā na nivartanti bhūya:  .

ēnamuktaprakāraṃ suvirūḍhamūlaṃ suṣṭhu vividhaṃ rūḍhamūlamaśvatthaṃ samyagjñānamūlēna dṛḍhēna guṇamayabhōgāsaṃgākhyēna śastrēṇa chitvā, tata: viṣayāsaṃgāddhētō: tatpadaṃ parimārgitavyaṃ -anvēṣaṇīyam, yasmin gatā bhūyō na nivartantē . 3 .

kathamanādikālapravṛttō guṇamayabhōgasaṃga: tanmūlaṃ ca viparītajñānaṃ nivartata ityata āha –

tamēva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadyēdyata: pravṛtti: prasṛtā purāṇī  . 4 .

ajñānādinivṛttayē tamēva ca ādyaṃ kṛtsnasyādibhūtam, mayādhyakṣēṇa prakṛti: sūyatē sacarācaram‘, ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavō mattassarvaṃ pravartatē (bha.gī.9.10), matta: parataraṃ nānyatkiñcidasti dhanañjaya (7.4) ityādiṣūktamādyaṃ puruṣamēva śaraṇaṃ prapadyēttamēva śaraṇaṃ prapadyēta . yata: yasmātkṛtsnasya sraṣṭuriyaṃ guṇamayabhōgasaṅgapravṛtti:, purāṇī purātanī prasṛtā . uktaṃ hi mayaitatpūrvamēva, daivī hyēṣā guṇamayī mama māyā dūratyayā . māmēva yē prapadyantē māyāmētāṃ taranti tē (7.14) iti . prapadyē yata: pravṛttiriti vā pāṭha: tamēva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadya – śaraṇamupagamya, iyata: ajñānanivṛttyādē: kṛstnasyaitasya sādhanabhūtā pravṛtti: purāṇī purātanī prasṛtā . purātanānāṃ mumukṣūṇāṃ pravṛtti: purāṇī . purātanā hi mumukṣavō māmēva śaraṇamupagamya nirmuktabandhāssaṃjātā ityartha: . 4 .

nirmānamōhā jitasaṅgadōṣā adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmā:  .

dvandvairvimuktāssukhadu:khasaṃjñairgacchantyamūḍhā: padamavyayaṃ tat . 5 .

ēvaṃ māṃ śaraṇamupagamya nirmānamōhā: nirgatānātmātmābhimānarūpamōhā:, jitasaṅgadōṣā jitaguṇamayabhōgasaṅgākhyadōṣā: . adhyātmanityā: ātmani yajjñānaṃ tadadhyātmam, ātmajñānaniratā:. vinivṛttakāmā: vinivṛttataditarakāmā: sukhadu:khasajñairdvandvaiśca vimuktā:, amūḍhā: ātmānātmasvabhavajñā:, tadavyayaṃ padaṃ gacchanti anavacchinnajñānākāramātmānaṃ yathāvasthitaṃ prāpnuvanti māṃ śaraṇamupagatānāṃ matprasādādērēvaitā: sarvā: pravṛttaya: suśakā: siddhiparyantā bhavantītyartha: . 5 .

na tadbhāsayatē sūryō na śaśāṅkō na pāvaka:  .

yadgatvā na nivartantē taddhāma paramaṃ mama    . 6 .

tadatmajyōtirna sūryō bhāsayatē, na śaśāṅka:, na pāvakaśca . jñānamēva hi sarvasya prakāśakam bāhyāni tu jyōtīṃṣi viṣayēndriyasaṃbandhavirōdhitamōnirasanadvārēṇōpakārakāṇi . asya ca prakāśakō yōga: . tadvirōdhi cānādikarma . tannivartanaṃ cōktaṃ bhagavatprapattimūlamasaṅgādi . yadgatvā punarna nivartantē, tatparamaṃ dhāma paraṃ jyōti: mama madīyam madvibhūtibhūta: mamāṃśa ityartha: . ādityādīnāmapi prakāśakatvēna tasya paramatvam . ādityādīni hi jyōtīṃṣi na jñānajyōtiṣa: prakāśakāni jñānamēva sarvasya prakāśakam . 6 .

mamaivāṃśō jīvalōkē jīvabhūta: sanātana:  .

manaṣṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛtisthitāni karṣati  . 7 .

itthamuktasvarūpa: sanātanō mamāṃśa ēva san kaścidanādikarmarūpāvidyāvēṣṭitō jīvabhūtō jīvalōkē vartamānō dēvamanuṣyādiprakṛtipariṇāmaviśēṣaśarīrasthāni manaṣṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi karṣati . kaścicca pūrvōktēna mārgēṇāsyā avidyāyā: mukta: svēna rūpēṇāvatiṣṭhatē . jīvabhūtastvatisaṃkucitajñānaiśvarya: karmalabdhaprakṛti-pariṇāmaviśēṣarūpaśarīrasthānāmindriyāṇāṃ manaṣṣaṣṭhānāmīśvara: tāni karmānuguṇamitastata: karṣati .7.

śarīraṃ yadavāpnōti yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvara:  .

gṛhītvaitāni saṃyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt    . 8 .

yacśarīramavāpnōti, yamāccharīrādutkrāmati, tatrāyamindriyāṇāmīśvara: ētāni indriyāṇi bhūtasūkṣmaissaha gṛhītvā saṃyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt . yathā vāyu: srakcandanakastūrikādyāśayāttatsthānātsūkṣmāvayavaissaha gandhān gṛhītvānyatra saṃyāti, tadvadityartha: . 8 . kāni punastānīndriyāṇītyatrāha –

śrōtraṃ cakṣu: sparśanaṃ ca rasanaṃ ghrāṇamēva ca  .

adhiṣṭhāya manaścāyaṃ viṣayānupasēvatē        . 9 .

ētāni manaṣṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi adhiṣṭhāya svasvaviṣayavṛttyanuguṇāni kṛtvā, tān śabdādīn viṣayānupasēvatē upabhuṅktē . 9 .

utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitam  .

vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣa:  . 10 .

ēvaṃ guṇānvitaṃ sattvādiguṇamayaprakṛtipariṇāmaviśēṣamanuṣyatvādisaṃsthānapiṇḍasaṃsṛṣṭam, piṇḍaviśēṣādutkrāmantaṃ piṇḍaviśēṣēävathitaṃ vā, guṇamayān viṣayān bhuñjānaṃ vā kadācidapi prakṛtipariṇāmaviśēṣamanuṣyatvādi-piṇḍādvilakṣaṇaṃ jñānaikākāraṃ vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti . vimūḍhā: manuṣyatvādipiṇḍātmatvābhimānina: . jñānacakṣuṣastu piṇḍātmavivēkaviṣayajñānavanta: sarvāvasthamapyēnaṃ viviktākāramēva paśyanti . 10.

yatantō yōginaścainaṃ paśyantyātmanyavasthitam  .

yatantōäpyakṛtātmānō nainaṃ paśyantyacētasa:  . 11 .

matprapattipūrvakaṃ karmayōgādiṣu yatamānāstairnirmalānta:karaṇā yōginō yōgākhyēna cakṣuṣā ātmani śarīrēävasthitamapi śarīrādviviktaṃ svēna rūpēṇāvasthitamēnaṃ paśyanti . yatamānā apyakṛtātmāna: matprapattivirahiṇa: tata ēvāsaṃskṛtamanasa:, tata ēva acētasa: ātmāvalōkanasamarthacētōrahitā: nainaṃ paśyanti . 11 .

ēvaṃ ravicandrāgnīnāmindriyasannikarṣavirōdhisaṃtamasanirasanamukhēnēndriyānugrāhakatayā prakāśakānāṃ jyōtiṣmatāmapi prakāśakajñānajyōtirātmā muktāvasthō jīvāvasthaśca bhagavadvibhūtiḥ ityuktam, taddhāma paramaṃ mama , mamaivāṃśō jīvalōkē jīvabhūtassanātana: iti . idānīmacitpariṇāmaviśēṣabhūtamādityādīnāṃ jyōtiṣmatāṃ jyōtirapi bhagavadvibhūtirityāha –

yadādityagataṃ tējō jagadbhāsayatēäkhilam  .

yaccandramasi yaccāgnau tattējō viddhi māmakam  . 12 .

akhilasya jagatō bhāsakamētēṣāmādityādīnāṃ yattēja:, tanmadīyaṃ tēja: taistairārādhitēna mayā tēbhyō dattamiti viddhi . 12 . pṛthivyāśca bhūtadhāriṇyā dhārakatvaśaktirmadīyētyāha –

gāmāviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmyahamōjasā .

puṣṇāmi cauṣadhī: sarvāssōmō bhūtvā rasātmaka:  . 13 .

ahaṃ pṛthivīmāviśya sarvāṇi bhūtāni ōjasā mamāpratihatasāmarthyēna dhārayāmi . tathāhamamṛtarasamayassōmō bhūtvā sarvauṣadhī: puṣṇāmi . 15.13 .

ahaṃ vaiśvānarō bhūtvā prāṇināṃ dēhamāśrita: .

prāṇāpānasamāyukta: pacāmyannaṃ caturvidham   . 14 .

ahaṃ vaiśvānarō jāṭharānalō bhūtvā sarvēṣāṃ prāṇināṃ dēhamāśrita: tairbhuktaṃ khādyacūṣyalēhyapēyātmakaṃ caturvidhamannaṃ prāṇāpānavṛttibhēdasamāyukta: pacāmi . 14 .

atra paramapuruṣavibhūtibhūtau sōmavaiśvānarau ahaṃ sōmō bhūtvā, vaiśvānarō bhūtvā iti tatsāmānādhikaraṇyēna nirdiṣṭau . tayōśca sarvasya bhūtajātasya ca paramapuruṣasāmānādhikaraṇyanirdēśahētumāha –

sarvasya cāhaṃ hṛdi sanniviṣṭō matta: smṛtijñānamapōhanaṃ ca .

vēdaiśca sarvairahamēva vēdyō vēdāntakṛdvēdavidēva cāham . 15 .

tayō: sōmavaiśvānarayō: sarvasya ca bhūtajātasya sakalapravṛttinivṛttimūlajñānōdayadēśē hṛdi sarvaṃ matsaṃkalpēna niyacchanahamātmatayā sanniviṣṭa: . tathāhu: śrutaya:, anta: praviṣṭaśśāstā janānāṃ sarvātmā (ya.ā.3.11.2), ya: pṛthivyāṃ tiṣṭhan, ya ātmani tiṣṭhanātmanōäntarō … yamayati (bṛ.5.7.22.mā), padmakōśapratīkāśaṃ hṛdayaṃ cāpyadhōmukham (nā), atha yadidamasmin brahmapurē daharaṃ puṇḍarīkaṃ vēśma (chā.8.1.1) ityādyā: . smṛtayaśca, śāstā viṣṇuraśēṣasya jagatō yō jaganmaya: (vi.1.17.20) , praśāsitāraṃ sarvēṣāmaṇīyāṃsamaṇīyasām (manu.12.122), yamō vaivasvatō rājā yastavaiṣa hṛdi sthita: (manu.8.22) ityādyā: . atō matta ēva sarvēṣāṃ smṛtirjāyatē . smṛti: pūrvānubhūtiviṣayamanubhavasaṃskāramātrajaṃ jñānam . jñānamindriyaliṅgāgamayōgajō vastuniścaya: sōäpi matta: . apōhanaṃ ca . apōhanam  jñānanivṛtti: . apōhanamūhanaṃ vā ūhanamūha: ūhō nāma idaṃ pramāṇamitthaṃ pravartitumarhātīti pramāṇapravṛttyarhātāviṣayaṃ sāmagryādinirūpaṇajanyaṃ pramāṇānugrāhakaṃ jñānam sa cōhō matta ēva . vēdaiśca sarvairahamēva vēdya: . atōägnisūryavāyusōmēndrādīnāṃ madantaryāmikatvēna madātmakatvāttatpratipādanaparairapi sarvairvēdairahamēva vēdya:, dēvamanuṣyādiśabdairjīvātmaiva . vēdāntakṛdvēdānām  indraṃ yajēta, varuṇaṃ yajēta ityēvamādīnāmanta: phalam phalē hi tē sarvē vēdā: paryavasyanti antakṛtphalakṛt vēdōditaphalasya pradātā cāhamēvētyartha: . taduktaṃ pūrvamēva, yō yō yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhakta: śraddhayārcitumicchati (7.11) ityārabhya labhatē ca tata: kāmānmayaiva vihitān hi tān iti, ahaṃ hi sarvayajñānāṃ bhōktā ca prabhurēva ca (9.24) iti ca . vēdavidēva cāham  vēdaviccāhamēva . ēvaṃ madabhidhāyinaṃ vēdamahamēva vēda itōänyathā yō vēdārthaṃ brūtē na sa vēdavidityabhiprāya: . 15 . atō matta ēva sarvavēdānāṃ sārabhūtamarthaṃ śṛṇu –

dvāvimau puruṣau lōkē kṣaraścākṣara ēva ca .

kṣarassarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭasthōäkṣara ucyatē    . 16 .

kṣaraścākṣaraścēti dvāvimau puruṣau lōkē prathitau . tatra kṣaraśabdanirdiṣṭa: puruṣō jīvaśabdābhilapanīya-brahmādistambaparyantakṣaraṇasvabhāvācitsaṃsṛṣṭasarvabhūtāni. atrācitsaṃsargarūpaikōpādhinā puruṣa ityēkatvanirdēśa:. akṣaraśabdanirdiṣṭa: kūṭastha:  – acitsaṃsargaviyukta: svēna rūpēṇāvasthitō muktātmā. sa tvacitsaṃsargābhāvāt acitpariṇāmaviśēṣabrahmādidēhāsādhāraṇō na bhavatīti kūṭastha ityucyatē . atrāpyēkatvanirdēśōäcidviyōga-rūpaikōpādhinābhihita: . na hi ita: pūrvamanādau kālē mukta ēka ēva . yathōktam, bahavō jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatā: (4.10), sargēäpi nōpajāyantē pralayē na vyathanti ca (14.2) iti.16.

uttama: puruṣastvanya: paramātmētyudāhṛta: .

yō lōkatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvara:     . 17 .

uttama: puruṣastu tābhyāṃ kṣarākṣaraśabdanirdiṣṭābhyāṃ baddhamuktapuruṣābhyāmanya: arthāntarabhūta: paramātmētyudāhṛta: sarvāsu śrutiṣu . paramātmēti nirdēśādēva hyuttama: puruṣō baddhamuktapuruṣābhyāmarthāntarabhūta ityavagamyatē . katham? yō lōkatrayamāviśya bibharti . lōkyata iti lōka: tattrayaṃ lōkatrayam . acētanaṃ tatsaṃsṛṣṭaścētanō muktaścēti pramāṇāvagamyamētattrayaṃ ya ātmatayā āviśya bibharti, sa tasmādvyāpyādbhartavyāccārthāntarabhūta: . itaścōktāllōkatrayādarthāntarabhūta: yata: sōävyaya:, īśvaraśca avyayasvabhāvō hi vyayasvabhāvādacētanāttatsaṃbandhēna tadanusāriṇaśca cētanādacitsaṃbandhayōgyatayā pūrvasaṃbandhinō muktāccārthāntarabhūta ēva . tathaitasya lōkatrayasyēśvara:, īśitavyāttasmādarthāntarabhūta: . 17 .

yasmātkṣaramatītōähamakṣarādapi cōttama: .

atōäsmi lōkē vēdē ca prathita: puruṣōttama:   . 18 .

yasmādēvamuktai: svabhāvai: kṣaraṃ puruṣamatītōäham, akṣarānmuktādapyuktairhēātubhirutkṛṣṭatama:, atōähaṃ lōkē vēdē ca puruṣōttama iti prathitōäsmi . vēdārthāvalōkanāllōka iti smṛtirihōcyatē . śrutau smṛtau cētyartha: . śrutau tāvat, paraṃ jyōtirupasaṃpadya svēna rūpēṇābhiniṣpadyatē, sa uttama: puruṣa: (chā.8.12.2)  ityādau. smṛtavapi, aṃśāvatāraṃ puruṣōttamasya hyanādimadhyāntamajasya viṣṇō: (vi.5.17.33) ityādau . 18 .

yō māmēvamasaṃmūḍhō jānāti puruṣōttamam .

sa sarvavidbhajati māṃ sarvabhāvēna bhārata      . 19 .

ya ēvamuktēna prakārēṇa puruṣōttamaṃ māmasaṃmūḍhō jānāti kṣarākṣarapuruṣābhyām, avyayasvabhāvatayā vyāpanabharaṇaiśvaryādiyōgēna ca visajātīyaṃ jānāti, sa sarvavinmatprāptyupāyatayā yadvēditavyaṃ tatsarvaṃ vēda bhajati māṃ sarvabhāvēna  yē ca matprāptyupāyatayā madbhajanaprakārā nirdiṣṭā: taiśca sarvairbhajanaprakārairmāṃ bhajatē . sarvairmadviṣayairvēdanairmama yā prīti:, yā ca mama sarvairmadviṣayairbhajanai:, ubhayavidhā sā prītiranēna vēdanēna mama jāyatē . 19. ityētatpuruṣōttamatvavēdanaṃ pūjayati

iti guhyatamaṃ śāstramidamuktaṃ mayānagha .

ētadbuddhvā buddhimān syātkṛtakṛtyaśca bhārata . 20 .

iti śrīmadbhagavadgītāsūpaniṣatsu purāṇapuruṣōttamayōgō nāma ēkādaśōädhyāya: . 11.

itthaṃ mama puruṣōttamatvapratipādanaṃ sarvēṣāṃ guhyānāṃ guhyatamamidaṃ śāstram, tvamanaghatayā yōgyatama: iti kṛtvā mayā tavōktam . ētadbuddhvā buddhimāṃssyātkṛtakṛtyaśca  māṃ prēpsunā upādēyā yā buddhi: sā sarvā upāttā syātyacca tēna kartavyam, tatsarvaṃ kṛtaṃ syādityartha: . anēna ślōkēna, anantarōktaṃ puruṣōttamaviṣayaṃ jñānaṃ śāstrajanyamēvaitatsarvaṃ karōti, na tatsākṣātkārarūpamityucyatē . 20 .
